Concept and mechanism
PostgreSQL can combine relational data, metadata, and vectors through supported extensions. Queries should use a distance operator compatible with the index operator class. Approximate search can trade recall against cost and latency; selective filters can reduce retrieved candidates. Measure authorized results using representative queries and assess parameters or iterative scans when the extension version supports them. Do not remove tenant filters to improve counts. Cost includes CPU, memory, storage, and connections. Local pools multiply with replica count; PgBouncer can reduce server connections, but pooling mode must match the transactions and session state used by the application.
Guided application
During fictional closing, 40 workers with pools of 50 can request 2,000 connections before other services are counted. Define an aggregate budget and bound concurrency; increasing max_connections without measurement can move failure to memory or contention. In Python, pass SQL values as driver parameters separate from the command; identifiers require their own composition. Azure Managed Redis can support cached data and vector search, but define expiration and invalidation around freshness tolerance. Semantic caching does not authorize answer reuse across users merely because questions are similar. Include rights, knowledge version, and embedding space in the design. A fast cache of stale or unauthorized content still fails the requirement.
Pool per replica: 5 × 50 = 250; after autoscaling, 40 × 50 = 2,000 potential connections. Evaluate the limit across the whole system.
Common pitfalls
LIMIT as guaranteed count; ANN without recall measurement; local pool as global budget; vector similarity as authorization; TTL as unlimited freshness.
