Batch, files, and reconciliation

Protect completeness and consistency when recovering processing.

Concept and mechanism

A batch chain has technical state and a business result. Exit code 0 can indicate that a program finished according to its logic without establishing business date, totals, or complete publication. Define input, transformation, and output controls, including the point when consumers may use data. Arrival through secure transfer also does not guarantee that the producer sent the expected business set. Filename, header, count, control total, and execution reference should be consistent with the flow contract. When discrepancies exist, prevent automatic propagation according to procedure and preserve evidence for reconciliation with the source. Avoid editing metadata merely to make a check pass.

Guided application

After partial failure, classify confirmed, unknown, and not-yet-executed effects. A timeout does not prove that a write did not occur. Safe retry depends on explicit idempotent semantics, scope, parameters, and key validity; it is not a property an operator can assume. If the chain provides no such guarantee, agree restart and reconciliation before rerunning it. Also calculate recovery capacity: with six thousand queued items, one hundred processed per minute, and eighty new arrivals, net drain is twenty per minute, or three hundred minutes under constant conditions. Communicate that assumption and the cutoff. Actual rate can vary, so track progress and revise the forecast.

IN PRACTICE

A job can be green and produce the wrong date; a queue can shrink too slowly to meet its deadline.

Common pitfalls

Transport as completeness; partial success as total success; retry with a new key; gross throughput as net drain.
