Security and operational readiness

Apply appropriate permissions and isolation and prepare auditable operations.

Concept and mechanism

ML security covers data, artifacts, images, endpoints, tools, and evidence. An execution role grants SageMaker permission to act on resources; the identity starting a job may differ from the role used by the job. Inspect actions, resources, conditions, and key policies before resolving AccessDenied. A broadly named managed policy does not guarantee access to every S3 object. VpcConfig defines subnets and security groups for connectivity; routes and endpoints also matter. Network isolation is distinct: it prevents outbound container calls, including S3, while the service handles configured transfers separately using the execution role. Do not assume placing a resource in a VPC removes all external access or resolves authorization.

Guided application

In an exercise, a script tries downloading a library during isolated training and fails. A correction may be an approved image containing dependencies while preserving required isolation. Do not open general egress without assessing need. Scan images and keep secrets out of code and logs. In generative applications, validate actions and arguments outside the model and preserve retrieved-data restrictions. Records should link identity, version, and operation without exposing unnecessary information. MLflow Apps and Tracking Servers have different logging behavior; confirm configuration, including data events where needed. APS handover includes diagnostic permissions, runbooks, tool-suspension criteria, and recovery of partial outcomes. Demonstrate that autonomy through exercises rather than assuming administrator access is a support requirement.

IN PRACTICE

Connectivity, authorization, and container isolation are related but different controls.

Common pitfalls

Administrator access as the AccessDenied fix; VPC treated as total isolation; secrets in logs; support without practiced recovery.
