AAA, ACLs, and control protection

Protect access and protocols without conflating identity, authorization, and transport.

Concept and mechanism

AAA separates authentication, authorization, and accounting. An accepted identity does not automatically receive every action, and a usage record does not grant privilege. In the described IOS XE authentication lists, a method error can permit the next method, but explicit rejection stops that attempt. Fallback rehearsal should separate unavailability from denial, with expected results and authorized recovery. ACLs have their own decision rule too: the first applicable match determines the result. A broad permit before a specific deny can shadow the restriction. Do not transfer routing longest-prefix logic into sequential rule evaluation.

Guided application

CoPP protects control-plane-directed traffic with platform-dependent limits and exceptions. A poorly sized reduction can affect adjacencies and management while some transit continues. In a fictional case, routing-class drops rise after a change. Correlate classification, legitimate rate, and symptom; correct or revert required scope instead of removing all protection. MACsec adds cryptographic protection between compatible participants, but protecting one segment does not demonstrate confidentiality through every remaining segment to the final application. Identify boundaries, supported modes, and additional protection needs. For each change, test permitted access, intended denial, and recovery using a new session rather than relying only on an old session remaining open.

IN PRACTICE

TACACS+ returns rejection: that is not the same outcome as no server response.

Common pitfalls

Authentication as full privilege; rejection as timeout; later permit as correction of an earlier rule; CoPP as a universal transit ACL.
