Concept and mechanism
A trunk change should retain existing VLANs that remain authorized. Confirm whether an operation appends to the list or replaces it, and observe results at both ends. Untagged frames are classified according to the local native VLAN; differences between ends can connect inappropriate contexts. In EtherChannel, static on mode does not negotiate LACP. Align method and member properties before accepting aggregation. Hash distribution also does not guarantee one flow uses the sum of all links. With stable member selection, a session can remain limited by that member’s capacity even while other links have headroom.
Guided application
STP protections address different assumptions. Root guard protects a boundary where a path to a superior root should not appear. BPDU guard handles BPDU reception on a port where the design did not allow it. Before recovering an errored port, identify attached equipment and topology; removing protection to clear an alarm can reintroduce the cause. In a fictional batch example, four links do not accelerate one session and no errors exist. Measure hashing and per-flow requirements before requesting replacement of supposedly faulty hardware. On OSPF broadcast networks, two DROTHER routers can remain 2-Way while becoming Full with DR and BDR. Expected state depends on role, so the same dashboard word does not always have the same operational meaning.
A session stays on one healthy EtherChannel member; that does not prove bundle failure.
Common pitfalls
Link up as valid aggregation; guard as false positive; aggregate bandwidth as session throughput; 2-Way as universal fault.
