Turn the exit promise into a deliverable
A supplier promises to return data when the contract ends. The technical manager needs to make that promise verifiable: which datasets, versions, relationships and metadata will be delivered; in what format; by whom; with which deadline and assistance. Add dependencies the project must reconstruct, such as identities, keys, jobs and observability. An export obligation does not establish that the application will work at the destination. In a fictional APS case, the data owner validates reconciliation, security validates access and operations demonstrates procedure execution without depending on a supplier employee’s personal account. Legal negotiation and interpretation remain with qualified owners; these examples are technical planning criteria.
Relate assurance to the contracted service
A control report answers only questions within its scope and period. When reviewing supplier evidence, identify the actual service, applicable regions, dates, exceptions and controls still operated by the customer. The portability lab proves local results; it is not a supplier audit. Nor should a report about a provider environment be assumed to test the customer application configuration automatically. Record the gap as a requirement with an owner and expected evidence. If a new capability is outside the presented material, request specific clarification and decide risk treatment with the authorized owner rather than reusing a report about another product.
Reserve time to return and validate
The exercise includes a fictional calculation, not a measurement: a 120-minute window, estimated restoration of 25 minutes and validation of 20. With no additional margin, the latest calculated rollback decision is minute 75. Deciding at minute 80 would finish at 125. During preparation, distinguish these estimates from observed timings in representative rehearsals and add justified contingency. The plan should identify stop criteria, the decision owner and information needed to choose between fixing forward and returning. Copy completion is not change completion: integrity, access and operational use still require acceptance within the agreed window.
Account for writes after cutover
The script adds seven minor units to a destination position. The source retains the old value even when the initial export was perfect. Simply routing traffic back to the source could lose that update. The lab demonstrates divergence; it implements neither reverse replication nor conflict resolution. In a real project, define when the destination accepts writes, how they will be preserved and reconciled and which conditions permit returning. If those changes have no approved return path, rollback requires explicit escalation. Avoid confusing old-infrastructure availability with the safety of reusing it as the authoritative source.
Close dependencies, costs and operational ownership
Exit acceptance should link each requirement to evidence, result, exception and owner. In a fictional budget, include supplier assistance, export, conversion, parallel operation, rehearsals and decommissioning in addition to new infrastructure. Do not invent provider prices or delete copies merely to meet planned savings. Retention, preservation and keys may maintain dependencies after the main transition. Hand over procedures, permissions, alerts, contacts and a recovery rehearsal using the operational identity to APS. A contract end date is not evidence of physical deletion of every copy. Summarize status through concrete open items and closure criteria, connecting this lesson with portability, risk management and recovery.
Correct position counts can coexist with incorrect amounts or permissions.
Common pitfalls
Confusing export with portability; hashes with functional equivalence; old infrastructure with safe rollback; estimates with measured timings.
