Observability, backup, and handover

Use control, traffic, and recovery evidence in daily operations.

Concept and mechanism

Observability should distinguish Consul from services using it. Frequent elections, increased commit latency, and server saturation guide investigation of network, disk, and load. Proxy and application metrics show business-path outcomes. A healthy control dashboard does not eliminate application HTTP 503. Compare signals with a baseline and recent changes before assigning cause. Also monitor certificate validity, capacity, and synchronization failures. An alert is useful only with ownership and appropriate action. Stale reads can continue without a leader, so a read response does not demonstrate current capacity to commit new writes.

Guided application

Snapshots store server state including catalog, KV, prepared queries, sessions, and ACLs. They do not automatically store registered applications’ databases. Protect the file because it can contain access material. For recovery exercises, documentation directs restore into a fresh cluster at the same version and highlights the sensitivity of the Raft operation. Plan access, dependencies, and subsequent consumer validation. In a fictional handover, a backup file does not prove a thirty-minute RTO. RUN should execute the procedure, measure total time, and demonstrate recovered service. Retain evidence, gaps, and acceptance decisions. Avoid turning restore into a routine experiment for every DNS error or failed health check.

IN PRACTICE

Snapshot present, restore never exercised: backup exists but recovery time remains unproven.

Common pitfalls

Healthy UI as recovered service; stale read as commit; snapshot as every application’s data.
