Clients, data, and troubleshooting

Handle uncertain outcomes, pagination, resources, and end-to-end evidence.

Concept and mechanism

A client library simplifies calls, but the application retains responsibility for effects, resources, and completeness. Return connections to the pool on every path, including exceptions, using the library’s appropriate mechanism. Increasing the pool may merely postpone a leak. Classify errors before retrying. A confirmed missing-permission denial calls for correcting identity or authorization; a transient error may justify bounded retry. Backoff with jitter reduces synchronized attempts but does not create idempotency. In Cloud Storage, generation preconditions can protect writes against concurrent changes. A timeout does not prove that the server did not apply the operation: the outcome can be uncertain and need state inspection or reconciliation.

Guided application

In a fictional report, objects.list can return fewer entries than maxResults while still including nextPageToken. Follow continuation until it disappears, even with short or empty pages. When requesting only necessary fields through fields, retain the token; reducing payload without it can produce an incomplete report with HTTP 200. fields changes the response, whereas PATCH changes resources. For production investigation, record project, revision, error, and request context without disclosing credentials. Automatically collected container logs are not all correlated with request logs: without an appropriate library, emit the structured trace field in the documented format. Also confirm effective project and identity before enabling an API, because fixing the wrong project can merely hide misconfiguration.

IN PRACTICE

fields=items(name),nextPageToken retains names and the information needed to continue listing.

Common pitfalls

Timeout as not executed; backoff as idempotency; short page as completion; HTTP 200 as completeness.
