Tests, emulators, and AI assistance

Build tests validating requirements and making environment limits explicit.

Concept and mechanism

A test should distinguish correct behavior from a plausible but incorrect implementation. Derive expected results from requirements, including boundaries, errors, and concurrency. If code and test repeat the same incorrect formula, both can agree without meeting business needs. AI assistants can help create tests and explain code, but outputs need review. Current documentation distinguishes Gemini Code Assist Standard and Enterprise from retired individual offerings; confirm the offering before following installation instructions. Regardless of tooling, retain acceptance criteria and review responsibility. For temporal rules, a controllable clock permits tests immediately before, at, and after expiration without depending on fragile sleeps.

Guided application

In a fictional Pub/Sub client, local tests confirm publishing and consumption but do not prove production IAM: the emulator has documented limitations. Add integration tests in an isolated environment with representative identity, APIs, and networking. Also confirm that PUBSUB_EMULATOR_HOST did not reach the real environment, because compatible libraries use that variable to choose the destination. When a call fails, record endpoint, project, principal, and error with sensitive data removed. Avoid fixing a test by granting broad privileges to an incorrect identity. A useful suite covers success as well as failures after persistent effects, partial responses, and version changes. Its report should state what was demonstrated and which surfaces remain unvalidated.

IN PRACTICE

A page with 40 results and continuation deserves its own test even when the request permits 100.

Common pitfalls

Emulator as production; generated test as oracle; sleep as a time rule; green as complete coverage.
