Improvement, upgrades, and parallelism

Change the solution while preserving coverage and diagnostic capability.

Concept and mechanism

Improving automation means increasing sustainable usefulness rather than only shortening duration. Before removing checks, identify covered risks and genuine duplication. Before upgrading a library, check compatibility with the runner, browsers, adapters, and report formats. Try the change within a controlled scope and compare results against a known reference. If the new version changes assertion meaning or selects fewer tests, comparing green status is insufficient. Retain a configuration rollback path and document evidence justifying adoption. Product updates may require revisiting test architecture rather than accumulating exceptions within a generic layer.

Guided application

With parallel execution, completion time depends on the slowest part and shared overhead. If four shards take four, five, six, and eleven minutes, the phase finishes near eleven minutes plus external overhead, rather than six and a half simply because that is the average. Investigate imbalance, repeated setup, and saturated resources before doubling workers. Confirm that tests can run independently and each shard uses appropriate data. Automating setup and cleanup may be more valuable than increasing concurrency. When a tool suggests automatically repairing a selector, review whether it still identifies the same control; adapting a test to the wrong element can hide a regression.

IN PRACTICE

Shards taking 4/5/6/11 minutes: maximum 11, average 6.5.

Common pitfalls

More workers treated as a guarantee; mean treated as total duration; selector repair without intent review.
