Code and architecture review

Look for failure modes before integrated execution.

Concept and mechanism

A technical review gains value when participants bring concrete questions and understand relevant contracts. For a service that opens a database connection, performs an operation, and returns a response, investigate the error path too: is the connection returned to the pool when an exception occurs? Code review can follow resources, values, and exits without waiting for a leak to cause an incident. A checklist guides attention but does not replace understanding the program. Adapt it to the language and product history, recording observations with location, mechanism, and consequence. Avoid universal advice such as never comparing decimal values: numeric representation and the rule determine an appropriate comparison.

Guided application

At architecture level, follow shared dependencies and concurrency limits. Two instances with separate caches may return different versions if invalidation does not follow an update. Increasing every instance’s pool can exceed the database’s total connection limit. A queue without a defined capacity or expiry policy can turn a short spike into prolonged delay. Discuss these hypotheses with authors and turn them into decisions or specific tests without assuming every observation automatically proves a defect. For APS, include diagnosis and recovery: which identifier connects request, record, and effect, and how is a failed request distinguished from a completed request whose response was lost? Preserve answers in documentation the team uses.

IN PRACTICE

Four instances with pools of 40 can request 160 connections from a database limited to 120.

Common pitfalls

Checklist without context; isolated pool treated as global capacity; observation treated as blame.
