Technical state and functional outcome
A scheduler evaluates execution under configured rules. AutoSys success codes can be configured; do not assume a code is interpreted identically across jobs. A script can exit with an accepted code while producing an incomplete file. Functional validation should exist in the job design or an associated step, using criteria such as business date, counts, and reconciliation.
Dependencies include time and resources
A chain may depend on predecessors, calendars, files, resources, machines, and execution windows. Before rerunning, identify the actual unmet condition. Check time zones and business date, especially in overnight processing and clock changes. A job that has not started may correctly be waiting; that needs a different decision from a process that started and partially failed.
Rerunning with state control
Confirm what has already been applied, whether the job is idempotent, and how later steps interpret the result. Manually setting success may release dependent work before data is ready. If an authorized procedure requires manual intervention, record reason, evidence, approver, and validation. Estimate remaining time to cutoff and communicate risk before the deadline vanishes.
Workplace application
During recovery before cutoff, include diagnosis, execution, validation, and any contingency in required time. If the job applied some records, confirm the recovery point and duplicate controls. SUCCESS status may release the chain; verify that required data exists before any authorized manual status change.
The overnight load is SUCCESS, but only 8 of 10 expected files arrived. The chain is not functionally complete. Identify missing files, validate business date, and prevent reconciliation from declaring the population complete based only on scheduler state.
Common pitfalls
Omitting validation time; releasing dependents with incomplete data.
