DevOps, Git, and containers

Connect traceability, validation, and persistence to delivery flow.

Concept and mechanism

DevOps requires collaboration between development and operations with feedback throughout delivery. A pipeline can build and run tests, but its signal covers only configured checks. Integration, actual configuration, observability, and recovery still need evidence. Git retains change history; on an already-shared branch, revert creates a new commit reversing a change, while rewriting history needs coordination and has different impact. Also identify the deployed artifact. A tag such as latest can point to different content over time; an immutable reference such as an image digest relates what was tested to what ran.

Guided application

A container is a running instance with its own lifecycle. Its image is not automatically updated by every application write. Data stored only in the writable layer disappears when the container is removed. Volumes or external services support suitable persistence, but persistence is not equivalent to backup. Define ownership, retention, access, and restore. In a fictional case, preventing recreation to retain data makes updates fragile. Design should allow replacement of execution and validation of required-state recovery. For release acceptance, record version, configuration, data destination, and reversal criteria. Image rollback does not necessarily undo changes already made to data.

IN PRACTICE

The image name matches but its digest differs: you have not demonstrated the same artifact.

Common pitfalls

Green CI as complete readiness; latest as fixed version; volume as backup; rollback as data restore.
