Concept and mechanism
An incorrect change does not automatically require rewinding the entire CDB. First establish error time, affected objects, and cross-system dependencies. PITR can remove valid later changes within recovered scope, making reconciliation and approval part of the decision. Flashback offers alternatives when prerequisites and available history permit; Flashback Database uses mechanisms distinct from undo-based historical queries. A restore point is not a universal recovery promise. Also distinguish EXPIRED, associated with failed location during crosscheck, from OBSOLETE, associated with retention policy. An unavailable mount does not turn a required backup into unnecessary data. Investigate accessibility before making destructive retention decisions.
Guided application
In a fictional case, a feeder changed positions while other payments have already committed. The DBA assesses localized recovery, a consistent point, and possible replay of later events. For encrypted backups, confirm mode: transparent encryption depends on the appropriate keystore; dual mode permits that keystore or the encryption password. To improve RMAN duration, measure reading, processing, and writing; adding channels to a saturated destination may not help. A rehearsal copy needs isolated paths and integrations, controlled jobs, and protected data. Final validation includes both database state and absence of unexpected external effects. Document rehearsal limits before extrapolating results to production and retain evidence of the chosen recovery point.
Error at 01:10, discovered at 01:40: discovery time alone does not identify a point before the error.
Common pitfalls
PITR without reconciliation; EXPIRED as age; channels as capacity; clone with active production jobs.
