Concept and mechanism
Many blocked sessions can result from one transaction. Identify the chain, owner, and work in progress before terminating sessions or restarting services. Rollback can take time and retries can add pressure. For slow queries, an index can improve reads and penalize writes; assess the combined SLAs. SQL plan baselines manage accepted plans, while profiles help correct estimates without necessarily fixing one plan. They are distinct mechanisms with their own usage requirements. Database In-Memory maintains a complementary columnar representation for certain access patterns; it is neither an archive of every result nor a replacement for persistence, redo, or backup. Capacity and population still need planning.
Guided application
In a fictional upgrade project, prepare a representative workload for an isolated environment. Database Replay and SQL Performance Analyzer study different effects, subject to licensing and data-protection requirements. Compare functional results, throughput, errors, and duration distributions. If several parameters change together, observed improvement does not establish which caused the effect. A controlled intervention supports attribution and return. Resource Manager can redistribute capacity across services, but an overall deficit requires managing demand, resources, or deadlines. Committee reporting should show payment and reporting impact, risks, rehearsal evidence, and the proposed decision rather than reducing everything to average CPU percentage. Record remaining limits and the owner of post-change monitoring.
An index saves five reporting minutes but adds twelve to the critical batch: acceptance depends on the combined effect.
Common pitfalls
Kill without transaction context; index as universal benefit; profile as fixed plan; priority as new capacity.
