Concept and mechanism
Scope still applies after obtaining access in a lab. A route to an excluded network is information to record rather than permission to cross that boundary. Similarly, demonstrating access to an agreed synthetic file does not require copying additional real data. The objective is sufficient evidence for the intended decision. Before testing, define a change inventory and how to reverse it: accounts, tasks, services, tools, files, and configuration. PenTest+ includes cleanup and restoration, artifact preservation, and secure data destruction. These requirements need coordination; cleanup does not mean indiscriminately deleting system logs.
Guided application
In the fictional case, the report was delivered but two temporary accounts and a scheduled task remain active. Reconcile artifacts against inventory, remove test access, and confirm QA receives a restored environment. If another window is needed, keep work pending with an owner and deadline. Removing a key from a file does not revoke it at the provider or eliminate every copy. Confirm invalidation and handle dependencies under the plan. During logout retesting, removing the browser cookie is also insufficient if the server still accepts the token. Record session behavior and repeat legitimate and negative controls. Closure should connect each finding to its state, each change to its reversal, and each artifact to agreed retention.
Report delivered with a rehearsal account still active: restoration pending rather than complete closure.
Common pitfalls
Reachability as scope; deleting files as revoking secrets; local logout as invalidation; delivery as cleanup.
