Accountability and product direction

Retain focus and quality when the product involves several teams and interests.

Concept and mechanism

The Product Owner is accountable for maximizing product value resulting from the Scrum Team’s work and for effective Product Backlog management. They may involve others in analysis and item writing without transferring accountability. Developers organize implementation; the PO clarifies purpose, priorities, and needs. This relationship requires collaboration rather than document handoffs between silos. The Product Goal helps focus work. If it becomes irrelevant, the team may explicitly abandon it before committing to another. Preserving decision history is compatible with changing direction; retaining incompatible commitments merely to avoid acknowledging change undermines focus.

Guided application

When several teams work on the same product, they share a Product Goal, Product Backlog, and Product Owner. Adding local lists does not resolve competing priorities. The Sprint Review enables inspection of outcomes and context with relevant stakeholders, including users familiar with operational difficulties. Do not turn participation into an indiscriminate invitation list; seek those who can contribute to inspection. Also retain quality transparency. Story-specific functional criteria do not replace the increment’s Definition of Done. If a shared condition fails, high priority or partial acceptance does not make the item Done. The PO should use this information in subsequent decisions without asking the team to hide unfinished work.

IN PRACTICE

A batch capability may work on the normal path while remaining incomplete if agreed recovery has not been demonstrated.

Common pitfalls

PO as task allocator; several lists as shared ordering; priority as quality; a new goal without addressing the previous one.
