Mentoring, conflict, and learning

Develop autonomy and turn disagreements and incidents into verifiable improvements.

Concept and mechanism

A Technical Lead increases collective capability by helping others understand reasons and make decisions within clear boundaries. Choose progressively challenging tasks, combine support with room to try, and review outcomes. Supplying a ready answer to every question can solve the immediate problem while preserving dependence. Explain the criterion, request a proposal, and examine assumptions. In technical disagreements, separate facts, hypotheses, constraints, and preferences. When evidence is insufficient, a bounded experiment can help; when a decision exceeds the mandate, present options to the appropriate owner. Discussion should remain respectful and focused on system behavior.

Guided application

In a fictional example, two colleagues disagree about a recovery mechanism. A short session makes the state to recover, available time, and required evidence explicit; its outcome goes into the decision record. After an incident, avoid reducing analysis to whoever ran the final command. Investigate conditions allowing the effect and define actions with an owner, priority, and observable outcome. If the action is to improve input validation, specify which invalid condition must be rejected and how to demonstrate it. Share learning in a usable form while protecting sensitive information. Improvement concerns changed capability and behavior as well as the document produced.

IN PRACTICE

Requesting a reasoned proposal and reviewing execution helps develop another technical decision maker.

Common pitfalls

Lead solves everything; disagreement treated as personal conflict; final action treated as sole cause; meeting treated as completed improvement.
