ISO 20022 provides a methodology, process, and repository for modeling financial communication with shared meaning. The business model helps define concepts and relationships before choosing technical representation. XML is a syntax used by many implementations, but replacing text with XML does not itself resolve differences between instructed amount, settled amount, and charges. The Data Dictionary brings together business concepts, data types, and message concepts. Component context matters: a field with the same informal name can mean something different across applications. A message definition describes the format; an instance is a concrete document using that definition.
Guided application
For a project, build a data contract recording meaning, origin, transformation, destination, and ownership for each critical element. Consult MDR for definitions and constraints, any MUG for usage, and community guidelines for the concrete profile. XSD is one part of that set rather than the entire documentation. Request representative examples and cases that should be rejected. Approval should demonstrate business equivalence alongside structural validity. This assessment does not issue ISO certification; the Registration Authority states there is no official ISO 20022 certification authority. Public pages support learning but do not replace full standards or contracts applicable to a real implementation.
Example: two applications use amount for different concepts. Before adjusting totals through rounding, the business owner confirms each value’s definition and approves mapping.
Common pitfalls
XML treated as complete migration; equal names treated as equal concepts; examples treated as exhaustive contract; quiz treated as implementation certification.
