Lead and remove impediments

Support team decisions and address blockers beyond its authority.

Concept and mechanism

Self-management requires goals, boundaries, and access to information. A manager does not need to assign every task to retain responsibility for outcomes. A capable team can organize execution while the facilitator helps remove impediments and understand constraints. Where knowledge is missing, training or demonstration may be needed. Where skills exist but a decision is stuck, questions about criteria and evidence may be more useful. Coaching does not mean secretly imposing a solution and asking the team to claim it as its own. Actual authority should remain clear.

Guided application

In a timeout dispute, separate observations from hypotheses and agree an investigation both areas can interpret. Avoid choosing by seniority. If resolution depends on network capacity outside team authority, make impact and options explicit and involve someone who can decide. Keep follow-up ownership so escalation does not become abandonment. For knowledge transfer, distribute capability: paired work, updated instructions, and rehearsal by another person are stronger than sending a document without observing its use.

IN PRACTICE

A DBA and middleware specialist agree timestamps and metrics to test two hypotheses; the PM follows the capacity decision blocking the rehearsal.

Common pitfalls

Confusing autonomy with abandonment; deciding by seniority; generic training for every blocker; escalating without follow-up.
