From need to solution scope

Investigate the problem before turning a technical proposal into a commitment.

Concept and mechanism

In a technical project, the initial request often arrives as a solution: move to cloud, replace middleware, or automate a job. Reframe the request as an observable problem before recommending investment. Identify who is affected, when, how often, and with what business consequence. Separate symptoms from causes not yet established. An interview may suggest insufficient capacity while the event sequence reveals waiting for human confirmation. Use several sources and retain discrepancies for investigation. Define solution scope through capabilities and boundaries; work needed to deliver those capabilities belongs to project planning and should remain connected to, but distinct from, the intended outcome.

Guided application

Imagine a process with 40 minutes of processing and 80 minutes waiting for authorization. Even if a change halves processing, the total only falls from 120 to 100 minutes if waiting remains unchanged. That calculation does not determine which option to choose, but it prevents promising a halving of total time. Also confirm whether authorization is a necessary rule, a scheduling limitation, or a habit without current justification. The analyst prepares evidence and alternatives rather than independently removing controls. In a business case, describe retaining the current state and the consequences of doing nothing. Comparing against an explicit reference makes the incremental benefits of each change more visible.

IN PRACTICE

40 + 80 = 120 minutes; reducing only the 40 to 20 gives 100.

Common pitfalls

Symptom treated as cause; tool request treated as need; local reduction treated as global gain.
