Leadership and stakeholders in predictive projects

Connect vision to approved milestones, resolve disagreements with evidence, and prepare communication and knowledge transfer by role.

Give the approved plan meaning

A predictive project organizes work around sufficiently defined scope, dependencies, and approved references. Leadership remains necessary during execution. In a fictional funds-reporting project, installing middleware is a deliverable; making reconciled information available on time is a business outcome. At kickoff, ask each team to explain how its package contributes to that outcome. If interpretations conflict, clarify them before assigning further tasks. When the sponsor changes, compare new expectations with the approved purpose and bring impacts to the competent authority while preserving decision traceability.

Resolve disagreement at its source

An apparent conflict between QA and Linux may originate in a poorly assigned dependency: nobody delivered the approved port matrix. Start with facts, responsibilities, and interfaces before assessing individual behavior. If two architects use different measurement intervals, put their models on the requirement’s common basis. Averaging positions does not necessarily produce a technical solution. During meetings, intervene when personal remarks prevent someone from presenting evidence. Restore agreed rules and ensure the failure is examined. A cordial atmosphere without critical information can produce a wrong acceptance decision.

Delegate and develop capability

Predictive control does not require the PM to approve every technical step. An experienced owner can choose an internal package sequence within defined cost, interface, and milestone boundaries. For someone skilled in Linux but new to the service’s Autosys setup, combine a bounded task, support, and observation of execution. In a matrix structure, the PM cannot invent capacity either: if functional management withdraws staff, quantify the effect, negotiate options, and escalate when the conflict exceeds the PM’s authority. Do not confirm dates using overtime nobody authorized.

Align criteria and hear affected groups

A stakeholder’s hierarchical influence does not measure the knowledge needed to operate a service. Engage shifts that will execute the procedure and external consumers of approved interfaces. Provide material before international meetings and reserve space for input, especially where language or hierarchy makes participation difficult. For a requirement saying only ready at 07:00, confirm whether ready includes reconciliation. A signature does not resolve divergent interpretations. Record a measurable criterion, assess impact, and obtain the applicable decision before promising a new commitment.

Transfer knowledge people can use

The transition plan should consider availability, critical knowledge, and the ability to apply it. If a specialist leaves before the scheduled session, bring forward exception capture and practice with a successor. In a suitable rehearsal, observe whether RUN can recover the JVM and explain when to stop and escalate. The runbook should describe how to obtain authorized access without exposing passwords in a repository open to suppliers. This distinction permits sharing procedures while protecting credentials. Delivered documentation, attended training, and demonstrated execution are different evidence types and should be reported separately.

Guided practice and communication summary

Use the exercise below to prepare the gate message. The plan requires four roles, but five replies represent only three: RUN is missing. Automated minutes also omitted that proceeding depended on those acknowledgments. Correct the condition, identify the owner and deadline for the missing response, and distinguish the booked window from authority to execute. In another report, keep the November 30 baseline and December 12 forecast visible, with the cause and requested decision. In summary, communicate what is established, what remains pending, and who can decide.

Synthetic communication exercise / Exercício fictício de comunicação
required_roles = [business, network, DBA, RUN]
replies = [network, network, business, DBA, network]
covered_roles = [business, network, DBA]
missing_roles = [RUN]
coverage = 3 / 4 = 75%
minutes = "Proceed only after all four roles acknowledge"
current_state = conditional_authorization_not_yet_satisfied
Write the corrected decision message / Redige a mensagem corrigida.
IN PRACTICE

Five messages cover only business, network, and DBA. RUN remains unconfirmed, so conditional authorization does not yet permit execution.

Common pitfalls

Confusing silence with agreement, averages with solutions, attendance with learning, or automated text with the decision actually granted.

Take this idea with you

An approved plan needs people who understand the outcome, have authority and capability, and receive information faithful to decisions.
