Concept and mechanism
A lead represents a relationship still being qualified. In business lead conversion, Account, Contact, and Opportunity have different responsibilities. Existing account and contact records should be considered when identity is confirmed. A campaign measures participation and response through its members; that response does not prove revenue or a closed deal.
Guided application
Before converting, confirm matches, ownership, and intended status. Avoid creating new identities simply because a name is spelled differently. For similar campaigns, agree statuses and the meaning of Responded before comparing results. In commercial follow-up, record activities with an owner and due date, related to the correct deal, so the next action can be tracked on the timeline. When analyzing a campaign, ask about the denominator, reporting period, and event that counts as a response. Keep definitions alongside the report so a team in another country can interpret the same measure. A regional difference may result from different classifications without representing stronger sales performance. Before proposing action to the sponsor, distinguish a real outcome change from a change in how it is measured. Record unresolved classification gaps explicitly.
Two teams organize briefings for business customers. One uses Confirmed for registration and the other for attendance. The sponsor receives apparently comparable rates, but their basis differs. The team reconciles statuses, publishes the measure definition, and analyzes related opportunities separately. Until reconciliation is complete, results are presented with an explicit limitation.
Common pitfalls
Do not merge identities solely because names look similar. Do not treat every campaign member as a response. A follow-up task should not be represented by a duplicate opportunity, because that distorts the pipeline and makes accountability harder.
