Understand the concept
A useful report separates status, forecast, and the decision requested. Green, amber, or red indicators help only when criteria exist. For a delayed dependency, identify outcome impact, owner, required date, and options. Each option should show cost, schedule, risk, and operational effects. Do not hide a pending decision in an activity list. A decision log records context, alternatives, authority, decision, rationale, and review conditions.
Apply and decide
In an international setting, write dates, time zones, and owners explicitly. An escalation message should say what is blocked, the impact of no change, what has been tried, and who must decide by when. Confirm the decision and actions after the meeting. Commercial approval does not replace architecture, security, or operations authority required by the organization. Confirm specific rules locally.
Workplace application
Practice a two-minute update in English: outcome at risk, evidence, options, and a decision deadline. Use a full date and time zone in invitations and records. If a previously unavailable region gains capacity, retrieve the assumption and review condition from the previous decision. A status color neither preserves that context nor authorizes an architecture change.
Example English update: “Decision required by 14:00 UTC: approve the revised deployment window or move the launch. The network dependency is not ready. Option A adds one support shift; option B moves the business date by five working days.” Values are fictional and need assessment before a real commitment.
Common pitfalls
Reporting activity without a decision; using ambiguous local times.
