Maintenance, recovery, and RUN handover

Prepare recoverable changes and deliver operational evidence.

Concept and mechanism

A cumulative fix pack aggregates fixes through its release but does not establish an absence of vulnerabilities across the platform. Review Java, IHS, plugin, applicable advisories, and application compatibility alongside the traditional version. Maintenance should define sequence, capacity during the window, stopping criteria, and recovery. backupConfig and restoreConfig handle administrative configuration; they are not a complete image of application, binaries, and data. Documentation requires matching release, including fixes, between the archive and restoration environment. On Linux, plan ownership and permissions separately; do not assume the archive reproduces those attributes. Also account for server stopping associated with the default restoreConfig behavior.

Guided application

In a fictional project, a middleware change coincides with schema migration. If a member fails, restoring configuration alone can leave incompatible layers. Before proceeding, assess remaining capacity and recovery paths for data and binaries. Preserve transaction logs when unresolved transactions exist and coordinate actions with responsible teams. RUN handover should include topology, versions, JNDI, TLS dependencies, monitoring, diagnostic locations, escalation, demonstrated recovery, and known limits. Define who confirms functional acceptance and who tracks stability after the window. This lesson uses decision cases and documentation; it does not execute maintenance commands or demonstrate recovery in a real environment. A controlled lab remains necessary to establish the specific procedure.

IN PRACTICE

A pre-fix-pack backup and changed schema require a coordinated recovery plan; restoring a ZIP is insufficient.

Common pitfalls

Configuration as complete backup; current version as absence of risk; cluster as automatic continuity guarantee.
