Release and transition to operations

Coordinate usable delivery with operational readiness and demonstrated recovery.

Concept and mechanism

Delivering a change includes making it usable and operable in its target environment. Define early what APS needs to assume support: responsibilities, access, observability, procedures, recovery, and knowledge of limitations. Demonstrate readiness with evidence proportionate to risk; emailing a manual does not establish autonomy. Plan gradual exposure where architecture permits, health criteria, observation points, and conditions for stopping or recovering. A proceed decision should consider the whole service, including dependencies and functional validation. Reducing scope may be an option; removing necessary quality without authority is not a planning solution.

Guided application

A fictional migration runs at the weekend because service usage is lower then. Confirm actual availability of needed people, contacts, sequence, dependencies, and recovery decisions. A rehearsal should expose gaps before the window, including whether APS can perform tasks with its own access. Define how to validate reconciliation and file completion rather than using only powered-on servers as success evidence. If a stop condition occurs, follow the agreed plan and communicate state, impact, and the next step. After stabilization, track residual issues with explicit owners. The end of the window does not automatically remove pending support, monitoring, or decommissioning work.

IN PRACTICE

Readiness requires demonstrated capability from those taking over operations.

Common pitfalls

Email treated as handover; partial technical success; assumed availability; unrehearsed recovery.
