Choose and execute responses

Connect response strategy to actions, authority, and observable effects.

Concept and mechanism

Choose a response by the mechanism changing exposure. Approving removal of an optional feature that is the threat’s only source may avoid that threat. Rehearsing recovery may mitigate impact without preventing the initial failure. Contractual compensation may transfer part of the financial consequence but guarantees neither continuity nor removal of coverage limits. Acceptance can be deliberate and active: the authorized owner retains exposure, prepares resources, and defines when to act. None of these strategies removes the need to understand consequences for objectives. The register label should match the intended effect and actual action conditions.

Guided application

For opportunities, increasing the chance of benefit differs from securing conditions for realization. Adding capacity that makes early completion more likely without guaranteeing delivery seeks to enhance the opportunity. Define actions, timing, owners, and evidence. If contingency already has explicit triggers and authority, once the condition occurs the owner should execute and communicate according to plan unless new information invalidates it. Do not invent a mandatory committee wait in every case. Also assess what the response leaves or creates: remaining probability of the original failure is residual; new overload introduced by an alternate server is secondary risk. Both may need further treatment.

IN PRACTICE

Activating the alternate plan at its authorized trigger is execution; confirming it protected cut-off is effectiveness assessment.

Common pitfalls

Contract as guaranteed continuity; acceptance as abandonment; extra capacity as certain benefit; unnecessary reapproval.
