Concept and mechanism
BIC, UETR, and RMA answer different questions. A BIC identifies a financial or nonfinancial business party. It has eight characters and may include three additional branch characters. Connected and non-connected BICs exist; a valid or published code does not establish connectivity, a valid customer account, or authorization for every service. A UETR identifies a payment along its chain. An intermediary should preserve the reference for the same payment rather than creating one per hop. RMA scopes messaging relationships between institutions and authorized traffic. It does not replace content validation, available funds, business controls, or outcome reconciliation.
Guided application
During diagnosis, preserve original identifiers and links between local and external references. Amount, currency, and date help investigation but may coincide across distinct instructions. If an upgrade breaks correlation, delimit the affected period and rebuild links using controlled evidence. For reference changes, compare version, effective date, and activation rules in each application. The newest file may contain changes not yet intended to be active. Documenting who approves a change and how results are confirmed reduces system discrepancies. RMA examples explain the concept; specific configuration requires current service documentation and authorized scope.
Example: two applications loaded the same reference, but one activated routing on load day and the other on its effective date. Comparing criteria is more useful than resending along both paths.
Common pitfalls
BIC treated as account; a new UETR per hop; RMA treated as financial approval; name or amount treated as unique identity.
