Concept and mechanism
A FIN ACK indicates system acceptance of the message; a NAK indicates rejection. This technical meaning does not itself establish beneficiary credit. The business outcome may require confirmation, tracking, accounting, or other evidence appropriate to the flow. A local timeout means a response did not arrive within the expected interval. The message may never have left, may have been accepted, or may still be processing. Classifying all these conditions as rejection encourages dangerous resends. Support should distinguish confirmed facts, unknown states, and hypotheses. ACK explanations use a historical primary reference only for the concept; they do not teach unverified current protocol formats or error codes.
Guided application
For recovery, preserve references and group instructions by available evidence. Handle rejections through approved procedures; investigate unknowns before authorizing repetition. In a partially accepted batch, reconcile counts and identifiers, avoiding resending processed items as new. Specific idempotency rules belong to the application and flow; an identifier alone does not establish them. Track pending-item age, available reasons, owners, and the next update. On hold does not mean complete. A small queue containing old items may be more urgent than a large queue draining normally. Priority combines deadlines, impact, state, and recovery capacity.
Example: 27 instructions have technical acceptance, eight rejection, and five unknown status. These groups need different investigation and decisions despite the same client timeout.
Common pitfalls
Timeout treated as rejection; no NAK treated as success; complete replay of partial batches; technical completion treated as confirmed credit.
